Unidentified artist, detail, Calle Amargura 56, mid-18th c., fresco or semi-fresco[?]

Description

The mural painting on this curvilinear arch, from a house at Calle Amargura 56, accentuates the arch itself while adding other illusionistic architectural elements. Tones of red, yellow, and green highlight the arch that is then accented by tall, painted sculptures on either side. Toward the top of the wall, the sculptures meet additional painted curvilinear arches that frame what appears to be a recreation of stained glass or perhaps mudéjar style woodwork. The painting of these architectural elements may provide another example of mural painting influenced by the then recently discovered murals at Pompeii. Another vibrant detail of painting beneath the arch can be seen here.
